The Rolling Stones worked their way from East Coast to West in June and July of 1978 with 20 appearances from New York to Oakland and points in between. Some critics say the tour presented the Stones at a sloppy, boozed up, out-of-tune low point; others called it "damned good." Bill Graham, familiar with the band's finicky demands for white wine, cheese and specialty items in their dressing room, respected the Stones' talent if not their manners. The Stones respected Graham's talent as promoter, not his personality. This edgy relationship, exacerbated by tensions stemming from Jagger's marital indiscretions and recent charges against Keith Richards for drug possession, created some uncomfortable moments backstage.
