You may recognize his name from the Cameron Crowe movie Almost Famous (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), or you may have read one of his articles in Creem magazine, Rolling Stone, Villiage Voice, even Playboy and Penthouse. Now when Mick Jagger and Keith Richards first got together in the 60's as 'England's Newest Hitmakers - The Rolling Stones', I'm quite positive they both thought that Mick would be the one to go on and become the International Health Inspector, or perhaps the Queen of Africa. But when George W. Bush approached the Rolling Stones (wearing a stone t-shirt!) and proposed that Keith Richards become the next Surgeon General... well, nobody in a million years thought that Keef would get his mug printed on every cigarette pack around the world... what an honor! The Rolling Stones worked their way from East Coast to West in June and July of 1978 with 20 appearances from New York to Oakland and points in between. Some critics say the tour presented the Stones at a sloppy, boozed up, out-of-tune low point; others called it "damned good." Bill Graham, familiar with the band's finicky demands for white wine, cheese and specialty items in their dressing room, respected the Stones' talent if not their manners. The Stones respected Graham's talent as promoter, not his personality. This edgy relationship, exacerbated by tensions stemming from Jagger's marital indiscretions and recent charges against Keith Richards for drug possession, created some uncomfortable moments backstage.
