In the Mass Effect Universe, the Special Tactics and Reconnaissance branch is a group of hand picked agents given the responsibility of maintaining order throughout the galaxy. Each agent, known as Spectres, is hand picked by the governing body of the Systems Alliance – the Citadel Council – who are the only authority they answer to, drawing parallels to the US Marshals, Army Rangers, Navy Seals, Delta Force, the Green Lantern Corps, the Jedi Knights, or Starfleet’s most elite officers. To be considered means that you have an impeccable record of service, and have shown to be resourceful and innovative when it comes to “creative†styles of problem solving. To be inducted is one of the highest honors in the Mass Effect universe. Commander Shepard is the first human Spectre, selected and indoctrinated during the events of the first chapter of the Mass Effect series.
