He had a new baby daughter, Melody, and the mid-year addition of Steve Gaines to the Lynryd Skynyrd line-up marked the band's return to its trademark three-guitar sound. Punched up with enthusiasm, Skynyrd set out on yet another tour with Ronnie's goal to become the premier touring band within striking distance. On October 20, just days after the release of their newest album, 'Street Survivors,' the band's tour plane ran out of gas in mid-flight and plowed into a Mississippi swamp, killing Van Zandt, Gaines and Cassie Gaines, Steve's sister and a backup vocalist. Gone was the dream, the dynamism and the dad.
