He was sick and tired of the Guardian's mishandling of the Green Lantern Corps. And now because of said mishandling Coast City was reduced to a pile of bone and ash. The Green Lantern Corps needed to be shown the error of their ways............with extreme prejudice. Some cleverly drafted retconning will later explain that Hal Jordan's erratic behavior was the result of an outside influence namely that of the avatar of fear Parallax; a malevolent being still conscious within the Central Power Battery provoking Hal to act...uncharacteristically.
