According to the continuity set in the 1978 series the Cylons were the machines of an ancient reptilian race that were created to destroy humanity......or they were created by said reptilians the reptilians perished for whatever reason but the Cylons remained and decided to destroy humanity. I'm a little unsure really. All in all they're a nasty bunch.
