This Joker t-shirt is right off of Batman #37 from 1945. This is one of the earlier versions of the Joker created by Bill Finger the co-creator of Batman and Bob Kane. Bill showed Bob a picture of actor Conrad Veidt in make up from the silent film The Man Who Laughs (1928). Then after the Joker was modeled on this photograph. Set in England 1690 featuring Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) who is the son of an English nobleman who has offended King James II. The King sentences Gwynplaine's father to death via an iron maiden which is basically a metal upright coffin (made in the 18th century) with spikes on it to torture people. The benevolent monarch also has a surgeon disfigure Gwynplaine's face into a permanent grin condemns him to laugh forever at his fool of a father. The Man Who Laughs is known for the grim Carnival freak-like grin that Gwynplaine is forced to wear as an adult and has been credited to igniting the horror genre.
