Yes the man responsible for Sin City and 300 caused a revival of the "Dark Knight" in the 1980s which saw Batman turn away from the cheeky do-good'er to the brooding character we all know and love today! He also got a little bit more bulked up and maybe he started doing 'the juice'. It would certainly explain the personality shift!
