  • The powerful, and empowering image is the bold retort of Small Faces founder Ronnie Lane to a very personal foe; multiple sclerosis. Stricken in 1976, Lane responded with ARMS, Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis, and his friends Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker and Jeff Beck participated with others in a highly successful all-star benefit concert at Royal Albert Hall in September, 1983. The concert was such a draw that the performers agreed to a four-city tour for ARMS-America in late '83 which featured sell-out stops in Dallas, New York, San Francisco and L.A.

  • Mar Y Sol, meaning Sun and Sea, was Puerto Rica's first international music festival, and the fact that it was held during Semana Santa, their holy Easter week, did nothing to stop some serious turmoil from brewing. The organizers anticipated 60,000 people but only about 35,000 attended. By the end of the first day, many concertgoers were citing frustration from lack of facilities, water and food, and were already headed back to San Juan to fly home. Technical problems and criminal activity, including two murders, two drownings, violence and robbery, set the stage for a most unenjoyable visit. The redeeming feature was the music, of course, a stellar lineup of some of the best musicians around: Alice Cooper, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, BB King, Dave Brubeck, the Allman Brothers, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Poco to name a few. Gridlocked traffic had Black Sabbath stuck at a hotel, where Ozzy threw a cherry bomb and literally bombed their room. Bloodrock was scheduled to perform but br

  • Cream member Ginger Baker maintained that they "... came to the Fillmore with the attitude that we were going to blow these Yanks off the stage, and we proceeded to do just that." Stanley Mouse made the infrequent choice to associate the color of the group's name with the background color of the poster.

  • Pearl Jam had yet to reap fame from their August, 1991 release of Ten, Nirvana's future held less than two more years with lead singer Kurt Cobain, and The Chili Peppers would soon lose guitarist John Frusciante as he battled a heroin addiction, but this New Year's Eve 1991 concert at the Cow Palace was a celebration. Look for Harry Rossit's signature smiley face, hidden in the picture.

  • Bill Graham's early concerts were "events" and BG008 is an excellent example of the unusual fare. Top billing was Andy Warhol and his Plastic Inevitable, with the Velvet Underground and Nico "Pop Girl of '66." The show was an amazing, kinetic rock event with vocals, keyboard and dance projected on the wall in strobe light fractured frames. The Mothers rounded out the evening.

  • The first time Led Zeppelin played San Francisco, they opened for Country Joe & the Fish; just three months later, they headlined four nights at Fillmore West and Winterland. BG170 was unlike any other Led Zeppelin poster or, in fact, any other poster in the BG series. Artist Randy Tuten had tired of seeing blimps in every Led Zeppelin advertisement, so he came up with the green avocado. Tuten liked it so much he "... wanted to do one a month that way- a series of crazy fruit posters."

  • Tuten acquiesced to the power of the blimp in this Led Zeppelin poster. The concert was typical Graham fare and mixed the goofy sounds of the Bonzo Dog Band with jazz-great Rahsaan Roland Kirk & His Vibration Society. Kirk insisted that his band be named on event posters and billboards, but occasionally, and to his great annoyance, the name didn't always fit. The poster gave a heads-up to Stones fans for their concert on Sunday.

  • Bill Graham closed the last of his three original venues, Winterland, with the Masquerade Ball in 1978, so the Dead performed their traditional New Year's Eve concert at the Oakland Arena instead. They played three sets that night, and 'Sugar Magnolia,' co-written by Bob Weir and one of the band's most beautiful, pretty-rhythm songs, was the number they chose yet again to ring in the New Year at midnight. The familiar Mouse/Kelley logo skeleton figures welcomed the fans, memories and traditions from the old venues to the new.

  • Robert Plant donned the original "Nurses do it Better" tee during the legendary Led Zeppelin Oakland Coliseum "Day on the Green" shows of July 23-24, 1977. The Oakland shows would be the last ever in the US for Led Zeppelin when the North American tour, originally intended to finish on August 13th, was cut short following the death of Robert Plant's five year old son.

  • Jimi Hendrix and the Flying Eyeball are images indelibly linked in the psychedelic poster art of the late Rick Griffin. Griffin discovered The Eyeball, in a much more benign form, in the 1950s auto detailing art of California pinstriper Von Dutch and reworked it over time to become the winged, bloodshot figure parting a ring of fire with serpent-like tentacles. The highlighted lettering, vivid color, and complicated imagery reflect Griffin's attention to precise details and the influence of Indian lore and archeology on his work. The Eyeball became associated exclusively with Hendrix's music in future billings and recordings of his performances.

  • Watkins Glen was the epic brainchild of Jim Koplik and Shelly Finkel, Connecticut rock promoters who had also orchestrated Summer Jam. Inspired by an onstage impromptu jam session between the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers, they came up with the idea for Watkins Glen and commissioned Bill Graham to build the backstage compound and supply production. The three bands lined up for the show were favorites of all three organizers, and were perfect for an open-space gig. In a special and memorable turn of events, 600,000 people showed up for this show at the Watkins Glen racetrack in Upstate New York, and kids were everywhere, crowding the landscape the day before the concert. All of them expected to do a sound check before performing, but didn't plan on doing one before a live audience - but there was no way that huge crowd was going anywhere. The Band sound-checked first, doing their entire run-through in one song. The crowd rocked. The Allman Brothers were next, playing for an hour, an

  • The summer months of 1969 and 1970 brought with them a slew of legendary performances at the 210 acre estate known as Tanglewood. Located in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts, this 1,500 seat open-air venue offered Bill Graham the perfect seasonal counterpart to his reputable indoor theaters. He launched a series of warm weather concerts under the proud moniker "Presented by the Fillmore East", and brought a dose of the finest rock music around to the manicured grounds of the Boston Symphony Orchestra??s summer home.

  • Jimi Hendrix liked Byrd's drawing on this poster so much that he later asked the artist to design a press kit cover for him. Byrd used a drop-bow compass to draw the little circles, and he labored to get Hendrix's hair "... Just right." Hendrix was at the height of his career in mid-1968, and he did two shows for the one-night-only concert. Sly & the Family Stone, not mentioned on the poster, was the second band. Just starting to get airplay, Sly was relatively unknown and was heckled by a crowd that couldn't have cared less who was opening up for Hendrix.
