After a three year absence, the El Camino was re-introduced in 1964 on the Chevelle/Malibu platform. The 1964 (and subsequent) El Caminos were an immediate hit with the public. A Super Sport (SS) version of the El Camino was produced each year, starting in 1968. From 1971 to 1977, GMC produced a version of the El Camino called the GMC Sprint. In 1978, it became the GMC Caballero. The Chevrolet Chevelle SS represented Chevrolet's entry into the muscle car battle. Early 1964 and 1965 Chevelles had a Malibu SS badge on the rear quarter panel.
