  • "If I hadn't done it, someone else would have. ???once we were going to do it, we wanted to do it right. ???" By the early 70's rock bands were burned out from the road. Performers wanted to travel less and make money faster. Bill Graham's Day on the Green concerts were the first prototypes of "festival" shows - multi performer sets in stadium settings. Staged on the lawn of the Oakland Coliseum, the Day on the Green concerts were a summer series started in 1973 that continued until shortly after Graham's death in 1991. "That was why I came up with the name "Day on the Green". I wanted to make these events special. I wanted to create giant outdoor sets so the bands would be going into a space that was like a theater piece."

  • Mars Hotel was the second release under the Grateful Dead's own label and is considered a favorite studio release by fans. Mars Hotel was a building near the studios where the album was recorded. When held upside down in front of a mirror, the illegible lettering on the front of the album cover appears to say "Ugly Rumors", apparently a play on the phrase "ugly roomers", which is a reference to the denizens of the actual Mars Hotel. Future UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, still in college and inspired by the Dead cover, founded a rock band Ugly Rumours in the mid 70's. The Grateful Dead Movie includes footage of the hotel's demolition. This vintage tee comes from the personal collection of a long-time BGP stagehand and band manager. As the detail image shows, there is significant wear on this 25 year old garment.
